Businessman drove at 92mph on remote stretch of A9

A Ross-shire businessman who hit 92mph on a remote stretch on a north road has been banned from driving for 28 days.

Commercial director William Bain, 46, was also fined £325 at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty and admitted a record for speeding.

Police clocked him on the Causewaymire section of the A9, in Caithness, on January 10.

When interviewed by the police, he replied: “Guilty as charged”.

Sheriff Andrew Berry heard that Bain was on his way to Wick to visit his parents, on the occasion of his mother’s birthday.

Solicitor-advocate Kieran Dean spoke of the importance of the accused’s licence in his job with an agricultural feeds company and was responsible for a massive area, from Shetland to the Scottish borders.

Bain worked a 12-hours- day clocking up some 45-thousand miles each year.

Glasgow-based Mr Dean said that the accused appreciated the potential dangers of driving at 92mph.

Sheriff Berry observed that Bain, of Newmore, Muir of Ord, had previous convictions for speeding and added that such an excessive speeds and their potential consequences was a regular source of concern for the court.
