Inverness man had hammer in city street for his “own protection”

Police were suspicious when they saw a 37 year old Inverness man crossing the road at speed, and holding something in his jacket.
Officers stopped Allan Smith of Kessock Avenue on January 18 in Glebe Street and he confessed he had a hammer.
But Smith also told them he was going to visit a friend in nearby Friars Street, adding: “He has just moved in.”
His story was checked out and when officers discovered that the man had stayed there for years, Smith was arrested for possessing an offensive weapon without reasonable excuse.
He then admitted he had it for his “own protection”, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood was told.
Yesterday at Inverness Sheriff Court, Smith pleaded guilty and was jailed for nine months. It was backdated to January 19, when he was remanded.
