A Celtic fan who missed his team’s Champions League match with Paris St Germain because he had sung an IRA song at a football match was allowed to continue supporting his team by a Sheriff.
Last month, care worker Martin Murphy had admitted at Inverness Sheriff Court singing a song in support of a terrorist organisation at the match between Ross County and the Parkhead side on April 16.
Sheriff Michael Fletcher had viewed CCTV of the 28 year old apparently leading the singing amidst a band of supporters, and imposed an interim ban on him attending future matches pending a background report.
However when Murphy of Lady Nairne Loan, Edinburgh appeared for sentence before Sheriff Margaret Neilson, she decided a longer ban was not necessary.
Defence solicitor Alison Foggo told her that Murphy did regular work in the community coaching soccer to children as well as caring for vulnerable adults and children.
She added: “It was foolish, childish and drunken behaviour. He has learned his lesson from this.”
Murphy, who has been a Celtic season ticket holder for over 20 years, was fined £400.
