A Moray reveller who dropped his trousers and lifted his jumper in a town centre bar in response to a pop song has been fined.
Darren Campbell, from Elgin, exposed himself before dancing while on a Christmas night out with friends in the town’s Downtown bar.
Yesterday, the 38-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge of public indecency from December 10 when he appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court.
Defence solicitor Matthew O’Neill explained his client’s stunt had been prompted by lyrics in Avril Lavigne’s hit, Complicated, commanding someone to “take off all your preppy clothes”.
Fiscal Kevin Corrins described Campbell lowering his trousers and underwear to his ankles and hoisting his Christmas jumper up while in the High Street bar.
He said: “I have seen footage of it. Effectively, he simply dances and raises his hands above his head as if he is having a good time.”
Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov replied: “I am not sure whether other patrons would agree.”
Mr Corrins added: “There is not a great deal of reaction from the people around him. They react to his presence, but not in any particular way to the dancing.”
Campbell, of Mackenzie Court in Elgin, was then challenged by bar staff when the offence occurred at about 1.30am before he was taken from the bar.
Mr Corrins confirmed there was no “sexual element or gratification” in the exposure or the dancing.
Mr O’Neill told the court his client was “deeply embarrassed” about the incident.
He said: “He had been out with friends, they have an annual meet-up at that time of year during the Christmas period.
“Mr Campbell has a patchy recollection of what happened. He became aware of the song coming on. He’s can’t recall exactly what happened, but there is a line in it ‘take off all your preppy clothes’.”
Sheriff Pasportnikov said: “On the basis that there was no sexual element and that nobody appears to have been perturbed by your dancing, you will be fined £300.”
