A Wester Ross fishermen who spat at police officers after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman was sentenced to 230 hours of unpaid community work.
Jack Maclean, 26, of Macleod House, Royal Park, Ullapool, was convicted after trial at Inverness Sheriff Court last month of police assault on the city’s Friar’s Bridge on March 31 last year.
He was also awaiting sentence on two other offences of resisting arrest and behaving in a threatening manner in Baron Taylor’s Street, Inverness, on October 14.
He denied spitting at the constables, telling Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood that he was annoyed at being arrested when he hadn’t assaulted the girl he was with.
PC Alexander Mackenzie and PC Jonathon Stowe told the trial that it was not accidental but a deliberate targeted attack.
Convicting Maclean, who was represented by solicitor Alison Foggo, the Sheriff told him: “You seem to make a habit of being nasty to police officers.”
After calling for a background report, Sheriff Fleetwood said only his comparative lack of record prevented him from jailing him.
