A 20-year-old Inverness man was jailed for 11 months yesterday after an unprovoked assault on a Hilton Community Centre employee.
The attack came just hours after Peter McCallum was released on bail from Inverness Sheriff Court on March 14.
McCallum then struggled violently with police officers who had come to arrest him. Sheriff Gary Aitken described the offences as “truly appalling.”
McCallum was already on two other bail orders at the time.
Sheriff Aitken was told on Tuesday that McCallum had got drunk after his liberation and encountered Ian Keene in OIdtown Road.
Mr Keene was then repeatedly punched and kicked on the head and body after he refused to give McCallum his mobile phone.
The court heard that police went to arrest McCallum at his home in Mackay Road and the violence escalated.
One officer tried to handcuff McCallum who struggled so violently with all four officers, he forced one into a wardrobe which collapsed, injuring the constable.
McCallum repeatedly kicked another before spitting on his head.
His co-accused, 28-year-old Gary Peden, of Rossal House, Island Bank Road, was in the house at the time and tried to prevent the officers from arresting McCallum.
Peden admitted obstructing the police whilst McCallum pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Keene, resisting arrest, police assault and behaving in a threatening manner.
Peden was jailed for 130 days. Both had their sentences backdated to March 15.
Sheriff Aitken told Peden: “You have a record for violence and disorder and have served two custodial sentences for violence against the police.”
He told McCallum: “You are fortunate not to be in a higher court. These offences are truly appalling and if they weren’t bad enough, you were on three bail orders, one imposed on the same day.
“I could impose consecutive sentences on each offence, but I will make them run concurrently. They could have been significantly more.”
