A Nairn man who brandished a knife at a friend who accused him of having a relationship with his ex-wife was fined £400 yesterday.
Last month, Stephen Smerdon, 56, of Peter Street, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted shouting, swearing and brandishing the six-inch long bread knife at Paul MacKay in Elizabeth Street on June 1 last year.
Sentence had been deferred until yesterday for a background report on the father-of-two.
Previously, fiscal depute Roderick Urquhart told the court that Mr MacKay and his wife separated and discovered shortly after that Smerdon had started a relationship with her.
He added that Mr MacKay went to Smerdon’s house and made allegations against him before starting a fight between them.
Mr Urquhart said: “As Mr MacKay appeared to get the upper hand, Smerdon entered the kitchen where he grabbed a knife.”
Mr MacKay was injured as he attempted to take the knife off Smerdon, by grabbing the blade and he then ran off, Mr Urquhart went on.
The court was told that Smerdon pursued Mr MacKay and confronted him in a neighbour’s garden where he threatened him with the knife.
