Knife-wielding Peterhead teen who provoked woman to fight avoids jail

Taylor Howey, from Peterhead, challenged a woman to a fight

A teenager caught carrying a knife after challenging a woman to a fight has been put on a year-long supervision order.

Taylor Howey previously admitted concealing a seven-inch blade in a towel, and sending a woman threatening messages over Facebook.

Yesterday, the 18-year-old returned to Peterhead Sheriff Court to be sentenced.

In the abusive Facebook messages sent between July 23 and 24 last year, Howey challenged a woman to a fight,

She branded her victim a “fat mess” and in one message said: “I’m going to come through and stab you”.

The court heard that Howey was later stopped by police after a witness spotted her carrying and a knife and was concerned she may act on her threat.

Officers discovered the blade inside a car she was travelling in.

Howey also breached her bail conditions by shouting at the same woman last November.

The court was yesterday told Howey had faced some “turbulent” times growing up and she was now close to securing a job with one of the country’s leading charities.

Defence agent Sam Milligan acknowledged the nature of the offences were “serious”, but said the teen was working with the Prince’s Trust and there was an “opportunity” for her to secure a job through that.

Mr Milligan said: “Clearly the matter is serious in nature.

“Social work reports show some turbulent teenage years and it is to her credit that she admitted that had she overreacted to the messages.

“She has been working with the Prince’s Trust and there now is an opportunity of employment for her.”

Sheriff Christine McCrossan placed Howey, of Leask Avenue, Peterhead, on a year-long supervision order and ordered her to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.
