A 20-year-old who led police on a chase through a Moray town has had his licence revoked for the second time.
Aaron James, from Elgin, accelerated away from officers when they tried to stop him on November 10 last year.
The driver sped at almost double the speed limit, reaching more than 50mph, as he attempted to evade officers on the A96 East Road and Reiket Lane.
At Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday, James admitted charges of driving carelessly and refusing to identify the driver of a car when asked to do so.
Police eventually opted to call off their pursuit of the car after he turned into a built-up area shortly after going the wrong way around a roundabout.
When officers eventually traced him at his home he refused to identify who had been behind the wheel of his car.
Fiscal Kevin Corrins said: “The keys of the car were in his possession. When asked to confirm who had been driving the car he replied ‘Not sure. Mickey Mouse?’”
Police were alerted to an issue with the car when they saw it while on patrol in the town at about 10.30pm.
When they turned around their car, James immediately accelerated in an attempt to get away.
Defence solicitor Matthew O’Neill said it was fortunate that there was little other traffic and pedestrians during the chase.
Mr O’Neill explained his client had become concerned about the police’s attention due to an issue with an MOT certificate earlier in the day.
He added: “The sensible thing to have done would have been to pull over and deal with the matter then rather than ending up in court.
“He has previously lost his licence due to an issue with insurance. If six penalty points were added to his licence it would be revoked again and it would take him time to get it back again by sitting the extended test.”
Sheriff Chris Dickson said: “It’s completely unacceptable not to stop for police and speed away.”
James, of Birkenhill Place, Elgin, had six penalty points added to his licence and was fined £360.
