North-east man jailed for 22 months after attacking woman with stick

A man was jailed for 22 months yesterday after attacking a woman with a stick and assaulting police officers.

Andrew McGonnagle assaulted Kelsi Buchan after waking up at his friend’s home while on drugs.

The 35-year-old fell asleep and woke up to find some of his belongings were missing then assaulted Ms Buchan.

McGonnagle admitted a series of offences when he appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to attacking Kelsi Buchan at Pine View, Mintlaw, leaving her injured on July 25.

He also admitted kicking two officers and headbutting another constable while on bail.

Fiscal depute Kelly Mitchell told the court McGonnagle appeared with from behind Miss Buchan with a weapon.

She said: “The accused was seen to move it behind the complainer and hit her on the head.

“She suffered a one inch laceration and attended Peterhead Community Hospital for treatment.

“The police attended and spoke to witnesses and he was later arrested in relation to the assault.”

Ms Mitchell said McGonnagle had been injured during the attack and required medical treatment himself.

She said: “He was taken to hospital at 6.30pm and it was at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary that he became aggressive towards officers and he kicked an officer on the upper leg.

“He was then discharged from hospital and taken to Fraserburgh police station and he later headbutted the same officer.”

Defence agent Stuart Flowerdew said McGonnagle believed he had been robbed.

Mr Flowerdew said: “His explanation for this was that he was on his way to see his mother.

“He had £200 to pass onto her to help his finances, but became waylaid and went to a friend’s house to take drugs.

“He had been asleep and he woke up to discover that some of his personal items were missing.

“His actions are a combination of anger at being subject of a theft and allowing himself to fall into a situation like this.

“Mr McGonnagle knows he should’ve handed over the money to his mother and gone home.”

McGonnagle, of Windhill Street, Stuartfield, also pleaded guilty to assault of James Malcolm and attempting to punch a police officer at the Garret pub in Mintlaw on June 15.

He also behaved in a threatening manner as he was taken to Fraserburgh police station.

Sheriff Christine McCrossan said: “This is violent behaviour and you have targeted police officers who were trying to help you.”
