A 23-year-old man who attacked his partner after coming home drunk was jailed for six months yesterday.
Inverness Sheriff Court heard that George Wright had arrived at their house in Rose Street, Beauly, in an angry mood on July 21.
Fiscal depute Laura Ryan said Wright, who was described as homeless, followed her to a bedroom where he punched her repeatedly to the head.
Wright, who has Easter Ross and Nairn connections, appeared for sentence from custody after a background report had been prepared on him.
Defence solicitor John MacColl said the report noted that his client had been a victim of violence and abuse during his upbringing.
He added: “He is a young man who needs assistance. But because he is now homeless, a community-based disposal cannot be imposed so a prison sentence is inevitable.
“But he will get the help he needs in the prison system. However it is a shame that no other disposal can be applied.”
Jailing him for six months, Sheriff Gary Aitken told Wright: “This was a significant and unpleasant assault on your partner.”
He backdated his sentence to October 4 when he was remanded in custody.
