An Inverness man who was high on a cocktail of drink and drugs crashed his car in January.

Six months later in early June, he embarked on a two-day long series of thefts from vehicles and a garage.

Sentence had been deferred on Kelvin Watson, 37, for a background report until yesterday when he was jailed for four months and banned from driving for a year.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson backdated the term to September 10.

Watson, formerly of Towerhill Place, was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid community work on his release plus take drug and alcohol treatment while under a year of social work supervision.

Watson had earlier admitted at Inverness Sheriff Court driving dangerously and while unfit through drink or drugs on the A96 in January 9.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing items like camping equipment, a doctor’s case and an air compressor from cars near his home on June 2 and a bike and a garden strimmer from a Raigmore Avenue garage two days later.

The court heard that the case did not contain any medicines.

Last month, fiscal depute Ross Carvel told the court that the road traffic incident began at the Eastfield Way roundabout.

He said Watson exited it in the path of oncoming vehicles causing them to take evasive action.

Watson then drove into the opposing carriageway, lost control, struck a verge and collided with a fence, causing damage to the vehicle and injury to himself.

Mr Carvel added: “He managed to get out but with cuts to his face. Those who sought to attend to him were aware he was under the influence of a substance.”

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said: “At the time he was drinking too much and using street drugs.”
