A man had been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with numerous break-ins across Peterhead, including the theft of poppy collection tins.
John Paul McCormick appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday at a private hearing on a petition alleging ten offences.
He made no plea and was committed for further examination.
One of those alleged incidents was the theft of Poppy Scotland charity collection tins from WH Smith in the town’s Marischal Street on Wednesday.
A glass-panelled door at the shop was smashed at around 11pm and two tins stolen. They had been filled with donations that would have been used to support veterans.
It is understood the store had sold out of the iconic poppy pins and that a mid two-figure sum of money was taken.
Poppy Scotland branded the crime “appalling”.
In addition to that break-in, McCormick is also accused of theft by housebreaking at West Road, Broad Street and Harbour Street, and attempted house-breakings at Broad Street, Rose Street and Backgate, together with a house-breaking with intent to steal at Merchant Street.
He has also been charged with an alleged attempt to pervert the course of justice.
McCormick, of Peterhead, is expected to appear at court again at a later date.
Detective Sergeant George Nixon said: “I would like to thank those who provided information in connection with these investigations and for the local community’s support while our inquiries were carried out.”
The two men, aged 29 and 38, who were initially arrested in connection with the WH Smith theft have both been released without any charge.
