Inverness man jailed for wine bottle assault on partner

A 25-year-old Inverness man who struck his partner over the head with a wine bottle and then tried to strangle a police sergeant was jailed for a year yesterday.

Lewis MacPherson, described as an Inverness prisoner, appeared at the city sheriff court and admitted assaulting mother-of-two Jamie Robinson in a house in Benula Road, on October 16 last year.

After he was arrested, he was taken to Burnett Road Police Station where he grabbed Sgt Laura Kermode by the neck as he was being interviewed by a community psychiatric nurse.

MacPherson admitted both assaults as well as previous convictions.

The court was told that Miss Robinson was bleeding from a 1.5inch cut to her forehead as a result.

Defence solicitor advocate Shahid Latif said his client was “damaged” after a “traumatic event when he was very young.”

He added that MacPherson was an out-patient from New Craigs under the care of a psychiatrist at the time of the attacks.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson backdated the sentence to October 17 when he was remanded in custody.
