A paedophile who raped a young girl and sexually abused another child has died in jail.
Peter Carter, 53, was locked up for nine years for the offences, but has been found dead after serving less than half his sentence.
The carpenter abused the girls for four years but was brought to justice in 2015.
Carter, who moved to Scotland from Huddersfield in Yorkshire, died in his cell at HMP Glenochil.
During his trial, the older girl told jurors that when police interviewed her she could not speak about her ordeal but instead wrote everything down on a piece of paper.
Carter maintained his innocence and insisted the girls were lying but he was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow.
He even vowed to return to his native Yorkshire after he was released from prison.
Jailing Carter, judge Lord Beckett said: “In different ways you have traumatised your two child victims.
“Your conduct was reprehensible.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service said: “Peter Carter, 53, a prisoner at HMP Glenochil has died.
“Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal. A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.”
