A north-east prisoner will spend an extra 16 months behind bars after setting fire to his cell and staging a fake hostage situation.
Jack Elms’s actions led to a section of HMP Grampian being evacuated on December 14 last year.
The 24-year-old began by setting clothes and bedding alight in a cell before threatening prison officers.
Brandishing one half of a broken metal pole, he warned that he would “find and kidnap” their children.
Elms also used his makeshift weapon to smash up a water fountain and a fire alarm.
He appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday where he admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner, having an offensive weapon, malicious mischief and wilful fireraising.
Fiscal depute Katy Begg said he also told staff he was involved in a hostage situation.
“Prison staff went to the cell and found the accused hanging over another prisoner,” she said.
“He said he had taken him hostage.”
Elms’ solicitor, Sam Milligan, said: “My friend describes a hostage situation, but it became clear quite quickly that was something which was being staged.”
Sheriff Andrew Miller sentenced Elms, who is currently serving a 50-month sentence, to an additional 16 months behind bars.
He told him: “This incident caused significant disruption to the operation of part of the prison and introduced violence and threats of violence.”
