An IT worker from Moray has been banned from driving for 14 months after being caught four times the drink drive limit.

Police were called to Southfield Drive in Elgin on December 29 last year following reports of a collision shortly before 5pm.

Yesterday Alan Taylor, from Elgin, was sentenced at Elgin Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to a charge of drink driving.

Fiscal Alex Swain explained the 59-year-old’s car “clipped” another vehicle on the street.

Defence solicitor Stephen Carty said his client had been drinking in a bar earlier in the day and had taken a taxi home before making the “foolish decision” to get behind the wheel.

He added: “When he got home he realised there were various items he wanted to purchase from the local shop.

“The car keys were sitting there and he has made the foolish decision to drive to the store. He was on his way back home when the incident occurred and immediately accepted culpability.”

Police found Taylor waiting next to his car when they arrived at the scene.

Breath tests done found that he had 88 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 22mcg.

Sheriff Gary Aitken said: “This was a very high reading. It was clearly a gross error of judgement.”

Taylor, of Robertson Drive in Elgin, was also fined £600 and ordered to pay a £40 victim surcharge.
