A former offshore worker has been banned from the roads for drug-driving after a “blowout weekend” with colleagues.
Andrew Stewart, who used to work in Libya, met up with some other people in Aberdeen last November to drink alcohol and take drugs.
But he was caught behind the wheel by police the following evening, still with cocaine and cannabis products in his bloodstream.
Stewart, 42, pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine and driving under the influence of drugs at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.
Fiscal depute Christy Ward told the court that police had been on patrol near Powis Place in Aberdeen when they found themselves behind Stewart’s blue BMW.
They noticed a “strong smell” of cannabis and pulled him over.
Officers found he was carrying a bag containing cocaine, then took him to Kittybrewster police station.
A blood test showed that Stewart had 55 micrograms of cocaine and 7mcg of a cannabis product per litre of his blood in his system.
His solicitor, Laura Gracie, said: “He had been employed in Libya, working offshore.
“He got himself into the habit of meeting up with other offshore workers for a ‘blowout weekend’.
“They consumed cannabis, cocaine and alcohol over the course of that time.
“He had waited until later in the day to go out in his vehicle.”
Sheriff Raymond McMenamin said: “It is a serious matter to be driving a motor vehicle while significantly under the influence of a class A drug.”
He fined Stewart, of Virginia Court, £360 and imposed a 12-month driving ban.
