A man has admitted neglecting two Shetland ponies.
David Davies, 59, of Grindibeck, Skeld, pleaded guilty to failing to provide adequate food, fresh water, shelter and veterinary care for the animals when the case called at Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday.
The court heard the case only came to light when one of the two ponies died of malnutrition and lice infection.
The charges relate to a period of more than six months from June 1 until December 7 last year, when the ponies were in a field at Greenmow, in Cunningsburgh.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the charges did not reflect the true extent of the neglect, adding that Davies had repeatedly ignored the help that had been offered to him.
Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence for Davies’s personal appearance and background reports. The case will call again on June 26.
