A 24-year-old man who got drenched in Sunday night’s torrential rain wearing only a thin shirt and shorts asked police to arrest him so he could dry off.
Gary Peden had his wish granted when he shouted and swore at officers when they refused to allow him to stay in the warmth of the reception area of Burnett Road Police Station in Inverness.
Peden, of 6 Tulloch Square, Dingwall, had gone to Inverness earlier in the day before the deluge began when it was warm and sunny but then took shelter in various pubs because of his attire.
But he missed his last bus home and went to the police station in Burnett Road for assistance.
Inverness Sheriff Court heard yesterday that he turned up drunk in the police office at 3.45am asking to stay there until the first bus later that morning.
However defence agent Marc Dickson said he was told that if he wanted to stay, he would have to do something which got him arrested.
“He was soaked and chilled and had nowhere else to go, after unsuccessfully trying the doors of friends in the city. So he acted in this fashion to get arrested,” Mr Dickson said.
Peden appeared from custody, still in his shorts and t-shirt, and admitted breach of the peace.
Sheriff David Sutherland was unimpressed, remanded Peden in custody until September 4 and deferred sentence for a background report.
