Butting an off-duty police officer in the face earned a man 150 hours community service yesterday.
Brendan McGuckin, 30, of 49a Combie Street, Oban, appeared at the town’s sheriff court.
He admitted assaulting Colin Gilmour by butting him on the face to his injury in Markie Dans public house, Oban, on November 1, 2012.
Fiscal Eoin McGinty said: “McGuckin approached a group of people and attempted to engage them in conversation. He was told he wasn’t welcome in their company, at which point he said to one of them, ‘do you know who I am’? The witness said ‘yes, you are Brendan McGuckin’. At which point he head butted the off duty police officer twice in the face. The officer suffered a laceration to the bridge of his nose.”
McGuckin was admonished on a second charge, which he also pleaded guilty to, of stealing an Ipod docking station from Tesco in Oban.
Solicitor Stephen McLeod said McGuckin had been suffering from mental health difficulties at the time of the offence, adding: “Both these offences were completely senseless.”
