A quadbiker who caused the death of a dog while banned from driving has been spared a jail sentence.
Reckless Grant McKenzie ran down Amanda Cardy’s collie while driving dangerously in a country park.
The animal suffered punctured lungs and had to be put down.
Last night Amanda Cardy said she was “disappointed” at the outcome of the court case, and “shocked” that McKenzie was unapologetic about the incident.
She said: “That makes me very angry, it could have been a child. The that fact that he’s not sorry means I’m very disappointed, because if he had felt any remorse then I’d go ‘okay, he’s learned from it’.
“If he’s not sorry he’d presumably do that same thing again.”
Ms Cardy, 51, a primary care researcher at Aberdeen University, said she “couldn’t understand” why McKenzie had “not shown any remorse” for what he had done.
She described the quad bike coming out of nowhere at Danestone Country Park, followed by a trails bike, and her initial shock at the fact that neither of them stopped after McKenzie hit her eight-year-old collie dog.
Ms Cardy said it would have been “common decency” to have stopped.
She said: “He didn’t even stop. The trails bike was just behind the quad bike so the person on the trails bike, he would have known, so there’s no way way they didn’t know what they had done.”
Ms Cardy had to spend £4,000 on vets bills following the incident, as her insurance did not cover the full cost of Ruby’s bills.
She said: “I’d have liked to have got some of that £4,000 back. I do think he should be made to pay even if it is just £1 a week.
“I’m quite disappointed he doesn’t have to pay anything.”
Soon after the accident, Ms Cardy got another dog, lurcher Bernie, to keep her other dog company.
She also praised the work of the police in finding the man who killed her beloved pet.
Ms Cardy said: “The police were very good, I’ve got nothing but praise for how they handled it all.”
