A man banned from the road for drink driving has been caught behind the wheel.

Paul Michael was back in the dock yesterday where he admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance.

The 31-year-old had gone to Holland for work following his conviction for drink-driving in July, but returned to the north-east when his employment there fell through.

Defence agent Liam McAllister explained Michael had come back to find his partner had kicked him out and all his belongings were in the car.

He added: “He made a catastrophic decision to get into the vehicle and drive to a bed and breakfast so he had somewhere to stay. He’s effectively living out of a suitcase.”

Mr McAllister said: “He apologises to the court for the decision he made.”

Fiscal depute Lynzi Souter said Michael was caught when police ran a DVLA check at around 5.55pm on September 26 which revealed he had been disqualified. The incident happened on Great Southern Road in Aberdeen.

Sheriff Ian Wallace further disqualified Michael, whose address was given in court as Raemoir Road, Banchory, for 16 months and fined him £600.
