A woman viciously battered a man unconscious in Aberdeen city centre over an alleged “slut drop”.
Demmi Simpson flew off the handle after she thought another woman had performed the flirty dance move for the benefit of her boyfriend.
The 24-year-old violently kicked and punched the woman before going on to beat another man unconscious when he tried to defuse the situation.
Fiscal depute Alison Reid told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the unprovoked attacks took place on Union Street at around 2am on June 7, 2019.
‘Did you just slut drop for my boyfriend?’
“The complainer left licensed premises and was walking up Union Street at around 2am when she stumbled a few times,” she said.
“She heard the accused shout ‘did you just slut drop for my boyfriend?’ and saw her coming at them in an aggressive and intimidating manner.
“She tried to explain she hadn’t done anything before the accused punched her in the head, pushed her to the ground and kicked her repeatedly to the head and body.”
When a man tried to step in to stop the attack Simpson brutally attacked him.
“He was struck on the body, fell to the ground, punched on the head and repeatedly kicked in the face,” the fiscal added. “He lost consciousness.”
Man left knocked out on street
When the man came around still lying on the street Simpson had fled and was later traced by police at her flat.
Her victim was left permanently scarred, needing five stitches to his lip and two to his gum. He had bruising and cuts around his eye and has been left with a “chunk of gum” missing and an “exposed tooth”.
“It’s noticeable when he smiles,” Mrs Reid added. “He now acts and smiles differently as he is aware of it when he looks in the mirror and it has made him self-conscious.”
A procedure to repair the damage with a skin graft could cost anywhere between £400 and £10,000.
Simpson’s defence agent Iain Hingston said her behaviour was “abhorrent” and “wrong” but that she has shown “genuine remorse”.
‘This has stayed with her’
“She accepts what she did but if there was ever somebody who has grown and learnt from it it’s Demmi Simpson,” he said.
“She accepts her behaviour was abhorrent and wrong and every adjective we could think of in those regards.
“This happened in June 2019 and she is not somebody who has breezed in and out of court since. This has stayed with her.”
He added that “nobody would be surprised” if Sheriff Morag McLaughlin was thinking of custody as a punishment but urged: “We are in a situation where she had made every effort to improve her life since this incident.”
The sheriff agreed there was “no doubt” these were serious charges but agreed to deal with Simpson by means rather than custody.
“You know how serious an offence this was and it is clear to me that you fully accept that,” she told Simpson. “You are a young woman and were even younger when this happened.
“I think it’s appropriate for me to deal with this by means of a community payback order.”
Bounced from court shouting ‘thanks’
She ordered Simpson, who admitted both assaults, to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and remain under the supervision of social workers for two years.
After hearing the sentence a tearful Simpson bounded from the courtroom and shouted ‘thank you’ repeatedly.
