A drunk care home worker was arrested by police after he admitted slapping his wife after wrongly accusing her of having an affair.
During a call with a police call handler Arun Premkumar, 35, said he believed his wife was cheating on him.
Premkumar, who was described by police as “heavily intoxicated”, freely admitted that he had slapped the woman “four or five times”.
Premkumar appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted one charge of assault against his wife at his then-home in Banchory.
Accused admitted slapping wife to police
Fiscal depute Kiril Bonavino told the court that at around 10.20pm on April 18 this year police received a phone call from Premkumar’s wife, who told the call handler she had not meant to make the call.
However, Premkumar then interrupted the phone call and “accused her of having an affair”.
Mr Bonavino added: “The accused appeared to be highly intoxicated on the call and admitted that he had slapped the complainer.
“When officers attended at the couple’s home the accused then told them he had struck her four of five times.
“He then repeated the accusation of her having an affair.”
‘He very much regrets what happened’
Defence agent Michael Burnett told the court that in the years the couple had been married “nothing like this had happened before”.
“He had had a terrible amount to drink and he very much regrets what happened,” he added.
“The whole process had been quite an experience for him and quite a salutary lesson.”
Sheriff Lesley Johnston told Premkumar that “this seems to be an isolated incident fuelled by alcohol”.
She said: “However, I want to ensure that this is only an isolated incident.”
Sheriff Johnston deferred sentence on Premkumar, who now lives in Kent, for six months in order for him to be of good behaviour.
