Aberdeen man throttled partner after they drank 70 cans of beer in one night

Deividas Rudzevicius throttled his girlfriend after the couple downed 70 cans of beer.
Deividas Rudzevicius throttled his girlfriend after the couple downed 70 cans of beer.

A man who was abusive to his partner for nearly a year throttled her after they shared 70 cans of beer.

Deividas Rudzevicius, 28, appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted using derogatory language and slapping the woman at a flat in King Street, Aberdeen over an 11 month period.

The situation culminated in him pushing his girlfriend onto a bed and restricting her breathing by grabbing her by the neck.

The court heard the pair had shared 70 cans of 440ml beer that night.

Rudzevicius pleaded guilty to one charge of assaulting his partner by acting in an aggressive manner, making offensive comments and restricting her breathing by seizing her by the neck between March 1 last year and February 5 this year.

Accused slapped victim and called her names

Fiscal depute Andrew McMann told the court that around March last year Rudzevicius started to become verbally abusive towards his girlfriend.

“This would commonly occur when he was drinking,” Mr McMann said.

“He would call the complainer names such as ‘bitch’ and a ‘slut’ and this would upset her.

“He would also on occasion make threats to assault the complainer by threatening to kick her – which would result in her being scared.

“In August 2021 the accused became violent towards the complainer and on two or three occasions during an argument he slapped her on the face.”

On February 5 this year, Rudzevicius and his partner had been drinking alcohol at their flat when an argument ensued in the bedroom.

It resulted in Rudzevicius pushing his girlfriend onto the bed causing her to fall face down.

He then put his arm around the woman’s neck and restricted her breathing for a short time.

The police were called to their King Street flat and Rudzevicius was arrested.

‘Clearly a worrying and distasteful incident’

Defence agent Nadine Dormer told the court that the couple had consumed 70 cans of beer prior to Rudzevicius throttling his girlfriend.

She said: “This is clearly a very worrying and distasteful incident, however both parties hope to move on.

“His alcohol consumption means his memory of the chain of events is diminished.

“He appears here as a first offender and he pled guilty at the first opportunity.”

Sheriff Garry Sutherland also described the incident as “rather distasteful”.

“It is one that the court must protect the public from and mark its disapproval of.”

As an alternative to a prison sentence, Sheriff Sutherland sentenced Rudzevicius, of Wood Street, Aberdeen, a community payback order with 12 months of supervision.
