A man who assaulted his wife at an Aberdeen hotel then called the police and reported the incident himself.
Kamalan Mariapann, 37, appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted striking his wife at a Travelodge and throwing a plastic bottle full of liquid at her.
He then picked up the phone and called the police to report what he had done.
The couple had booked a hotel stay while their house in Stonehaven was being renovated.
Mariapann pleaded guilty to one charge of assault on his wife.
Accused called police to report himself
Fiscal depute Ellen Barr told the court that Mariapann had booked a room at the Aberdeen Central Travelodge Hotel on Justice Mill Lane on May 3 this year, but that an argument had started between the couple.
She said: “The accused threw a plastic bottle of water at the complainer while she was on the bed, which hit her on the leg and caused water to spill out.
“He then struck the complainer once to the back of the head.
“The complainer attempted to leave the room whereby the accused repeatedly tried to grab her by the hand.”
Ms Barr then added that it was Mariapann himself who telephoned the police to make the admission that he had assaulted his wife.
Officers soon arrived and detained the father-of-one.
Sentence was deferred for reports
Defence agent Ian Woodward-Nutt told the court that Mariapann had moved back in with his family.
He added: “It is probably in the best interest of all parties that the situation is dealt with expeditiously.”
However, Sheriff Graham Buchanan told Mariapann that in cases such as this it was “usually beneficial” for reports to be carried out in the first instance.
Sheriff Buchanan deferred sentence on Mariapann, of East Lodge Drive, Stonehaven, in order for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment to be carried out.
