An abusive boyfriend attacked his partner and poured a bottle of tequila into her eyes during a row.
Kevin McGregor flew into a rage at an address in Aberdeen during a row about his infidelity when his now ex-partner threw a tub of pasta, which spilled on the floor.
The 36-year-old straddled her and rained punches on the woman while his son, now 18, begged him to stop.
McGregor then poured a bottle of tequila into her partner’s face and into her eyes, and pressed her face into the pasta.
Fiscal depute Brian Young told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the couple had a row during the morning of December 3 2021 about McGregor’s “previous infidelity”.
The woman believed that McGregor was still under the influence of valium he had taken the night before.
McGregor asked her to return food items she was holding and she threw them towards him.
He caught a sandwich but a tub of pasta fell to the floor and spilt.
As she tried to clear up the pasta, McGregor began making “derogatory comments”.
Mr Young said: “He then proceeded to get the complainer in a headlock, overpowering her and getting her to the floor.
“Using his legs to restrain her, he got on top of her and, straddling her, started punching her to the body and once or twice to the head.”
It was estimated he hit her around 10 times.
When she tried to roll onto her side to protect herself, McGregor grabbed her jaw and rolled her onto her back.
The fiscal went on: “He then started to pour a bottle of tequila over her face concentrating on her eyes.
Woman grabbed knife to protect herself
“The complainer describes being unable to see and being petrified. She recalls hearing the accused’s son shouting ‘dad, stop’.
“He thereafter picked up the pasta tub from the floor and with its remaining contents and pressed it into her face for around 10 to 20 seconds.”
When the woman eventually managed to break free, she started throwing objects toward him and screaming for him to leave.
McGregor then threw the tequila bottle toward her. She managed to dodge it and it struck the kitchen window, causing the inner pane to break.
The woman then picked up a knife from the kitchen to protect herself and again shouted for McGregor to leave.
He began to mock her and grabbed her arm. A struggle ensued before McGregor eventually left.
The woman was left with a cut to her finger and red marks to her neck, chest and back.
McGregor was later traced and arrested.
McGregor, of HMP Grampian, pled guilty to a domestically aggravated charge of assault to injury.
‘Very serious example of abusive behaviour’
Defence agent Lynn Bentley said her client was engaging with services to support him and was taking an opiate blocker.
She added: “He says he has not touched anything that’s been available to him during his period in custody.”
The solicitor described the couple’s relationship as “toxic” and said McGregor was “extremely remorseful”.
She said: “He’s apologetic unreservedly to the complainer and accepts his behaviour was totally inappropriate.”
Sheriff Andrew Miller said: “This clearly is a very serious example of abusive behaviour towards your partner at the time.”
The sheriff acknowledged the fact McGregor had been remanded in custody for the equivalent of an 11-month sentence.
As an alternative to a custodial sentence, he ordered him to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, complete the Caledonian programme and be supervised for two years.
He also imposed a five-year non-harassment order.
