Former Aberdeen player Funso Ojo accused of assaulting man at Tannadice

The alleged assault is said to have happened at Tannadice.
The alleged assault is said to have happened at Tannadice.

Footballer Funso Ojo is facing allegations he assaulted a man at Tannadice and knocked his glasses off.

The recently-released former Aberdeen midfielder is accused of assaulting Donald Dewar at Dundee United’s stadium on November 20 last year.

Ex-Belgium under-21 star Ojo was not present at Dundee Justice of the Peace Court on Tuesday when his case called.

Papers allege the 30-year-old repeatedly pushed Mr Dewar, knocked his glasses from his head and punched him on the head.

It is alleged Mr Dewar was injured as a result.

Ojo, whose address was listed in court papers as Aberdeen FC’s Pittodrie Stadium, made no plea.

Justice of the Peace Andy Gourlay fixed another hearing to take place on July 19.

Player sent off during match

On the date of the alleged offence, Dundee United beat New Firm rivals Aberdeen 1-0 in a Scottish Premiership fixture, during which Ojo and United player Calum Butcher were shown red cards.

Ojo’s second yellow card was given as a result of a confrontation involving a Dundee United fan in the stand.

Home fan Marc Jackson, 35, was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work when he appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court to admit assault.

Referee Bobby Madden said he had no option but to book Ojo, despite the player being the innocent party.

Free agent Ojo racked up 73 appearances for the Dons after joining from Scunthorpe in 2019, scoring once against Hearts.

Having spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic last year, the former PSV Eindhoven and Royal Antwerp midfielder’s contract was not renewed by Jim Goodwin this summer.
