Former Aberdeen FC star Shay Logan has been banned from the roads after being caught behind the wheel while more than three times the drink-drive limit.

Logan, who left the Dons last year, appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court where he admitted driving his black Land Rover while under the influence and briefly losing control of the vehicle.

It was stated that the right-back – who made more the 250 appearances for the Pittodrie club – almost struck a kerb and had “slurred speech” when he was stopped by officers on June 20 last year.

His solicitor told the court that Logan was “going through a difficult time in his life” during this period.

Father-of-three Logan, who now plays for Cove Rangers, also runs his own plumbing and heating business after qualifying as a gas engineer.

The court heard that the 34-year-old was spotted by police driving along the 40mph A944 Aberdeen to Westhill road.

Former Don had ‘slurred speech’

Fiscal depute Lewis Devoy told the court that at around 9.30pm police officers were on mobile patrol driving eastwards when they observed Logan’s vehicle travelling westwards at “what they felt to be excess speed”.

“At this point, they saw the vehicle straddling lanes one and two to approach the roundabout and then after exiting the roundabout.

“The officers turned and began to follow the vehicle, where they saw the accused’s car narrowly avoid striking an offside kerb.

“They activated the blue light equipment on their vehicle and the accused’s car came to a stop immediately.

“The accused was identified as the driver of the vehicle and the officers noted the accused’s speech to be slurred and, accordingly, they conducted a roadside test, to which the accused gave a positive reading.”

Logan was arrested and taken to Kittybrewster Police Station.

When breathalysed Logan gave a reading of 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22mcg.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of careless driving and losing control of his vehicle and a second charge of drink-driving.

Footballer has ‘learned a big lesson’

Defence agent Atlanta Jack told the court that at the time of the offence Logan was “going through a difficult time in his life”.

She said: “On the day in question he was out drinking with his employees and he tells me that this very quickly escalated.

“He went outside to contact someone on his phone and thereafter made the decision to drive home.

“Mr Logan tells me that this is extremely out of character for him and that he had no intention and didn’t plan on driving that night.

“However, due to the difficulties in his life that is just what happened.

“He accepts that he only has himself to blame and that there is no excuse for his actions.”

Ms Jack claimed Logan had “learned a big lesson” and that he wanted to apologise to the court.

“He tells me that he will never do this again,” she added

Sheriff Graham Buchanan fined Logan, of Denview Wynd, Kingswells, Aberdeen, a total of £1,200 and disqualified him from driving for 14 months.

Logan declined to comment outside court.
