Police officers were subjected to sectarian abuse by an Inverness man who was brandishing a hammer in the street.
Robin Munro, 39, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted making a series of offensive comments toward officers as he was being arrested on November 27 2020.
Munro, of Mackintosh Road, Inverness, had been refused service at a fast-food take-away near his home on Raigmore Estate.
The court heard Munro then took up a position in the middle of Millburn Road, shouting at passing cars.
However, an off-duty police officer who was cycling past quickly contacted her colleagues after she spotted he had a hammer.
Accused was ‘swinging’ hammer
Police traced Munro to his home and found him still holding the hammer and brandishing it aggressively.
He was “swinging it around”, fiscal depute Robyn MacLeod told the court.
“An officer made demands to him to drop the hammer but he refused and walked towards one of them.
“He was then grabbed and taken to the ground, restrained and handcuffed.”
Officer received sectarian abuse
Munro was taken to the custody suite at Burnett Road Police Station where he became highly aggressive.
The court heard he was behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, while shouting, swearing and making repeated threats.
He also made a sectarian comment towards one officer.
Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said his client had no recollection of events but accepted the witness statements about his behaviour.
Sentence was deferred on Munro until July 21.
