A man ripped a police officer’s body armour and tried to headbutt him after getting into a fight with his cousin over a girl.
Fraser Sime had been drinking at his cousin’s house in Aberdeen when it emerged that he was seeing a girl his cousin had previously been in a relationship with.
The situation “escalated” and culminated in a brawl in the street at 4am, resulting in police being called.
But when they arrived, Sime, 29, became upset that he was the one getting arrested and became violent with officers.
Fiscal depute Jennifer Pritchard told Aberdeen Sheriff Court: “Around 4.10am on January 8, a member of the public reported a disturbance to police on Back Hilton Road in Aberdeen.”
Police officers attended and applied handcuffs to Sime while they investigated the incident.
A short time later, they began to walk Sime to their vehicle.
Ms Pritchard said: “As they approached the police car, the accused took hold of one of the officer’s body armour and began to struggle with him.
‘Things escalated’
“During the scuffle, his hi-viz body armour tore.”
Sime was then restrained on the ground and a police van was requested to take him to Kittybrewster station.
However, on arrival at the station, Sime’s “obstructive behaviour” continued and he kicked out, triggering an emergency alarm.
Before the booking-in process had begun, Sime started to shout and swear about his cuffs being too tight.
The officer checked the cuffs and was satisfied they were not too tight, at which point Sime “attempted to headbutt him in the face”, however, the officer managed to move out of the way.
Sime was again restrained but continued to shout, swear and struggle.
Sime, of Howes Drive, Aberdeen, pled guilty to assaulting a police officer and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.
‘He’s truly embarrassed to be here’
Defence agent Declan O’Keefe said his client had been drinking at his cousin’s house.
He explained: “Everything was going well and later on in the night it came to light Mr Sime was seeing a girl his cousin had previously been in a relationship with.
“Things escalated and his cousin became confrontational.”
Mr O’Keefe said Sime tried to remove himself from the situation and went out into the street, but his cousin also went outside and “started fighting” Sime before police were called.
The solicitor said, although it didn’t excuse the “despicable” behaviour, Sime had felt his cousin started the fight and was aggrieved that he was the one being arrested.
He added: “He’s truly embarrassed to be here having behaved in such a way.”
Sheriff Sean Lynch ordered Sime to complete 80 hours of unpaid work.
