A chef attacked his girlfriend when she took away his Xbox and threatened to sell it to cover his unpaid contribution towards the couple’s rent.

Jonathan Wiggins “completely snapped” during the row about money on February 11 this year, his victim said.

She told The Press and Journal that she felt “broken” after the 26-year-old assaulted her in the woman’s own home.

Wiggins denied a single charge of assault, aggravated by involving abuse of his now ex-partner.

But he was found guilty at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, told to pay a £500 fine, £20 victim surcharge, and ordered to leave the 25-year-old woman alone for three years.

Speaking after Wiggins’ conviction, she welcomed the non-harassment order but said: “I don’t feel like it’s justice. I feel like I’ve wasted four years of my life.

“He’s been fined and he’s still walking free because he was a first-time offender. It doesn’t affect his life in any way but it’s really affected mine.”

During the trial, the court heard that Wiggins, of Hillview Avenue in Westhill, injured the woman by seizing her shoulders and body and pushing and pulling her.

She said: “He hadn’t paid me rent for two months. I grabbed his Xbox and said, ‘If you’re not going to pay me the money, I’ll just sell your Xbox’. That’s when he assaulted me.

“It was a heat of the moment thing and I’ve always said that it was immature on my part but it’s still not an excuse for putting your hands on somebody.”

The court saw photos of marks allegedly inflicted on the woman’s body, including an image showing a large bruise on her left thigh.

‘Speaking out to protect other girls’

At the time of the assault, a concerned neighbour who heard the commotion hurried next door and helped the woman, who called 999.

She claimed the emergency services insisted that she go to the hospital to be examined further.

“I’m speaking out to protect other girls,” she said. “This was somebody that said right from the start that he would protect me but he didn’t.

“I’m the most broken I’ve ever been in my life. I just hope people now see him for who he really is.”
