A former Aberdeen law student has been ordered to stay away from his ex-partner after he subjected her to a campaign of verbal abuse and accusations for more than a year.
Raymond Adibe Chisom, 33, pleaded guilty to repeatedly calling his former girlfriend “stupid”, “an imbecile” and forcing her to admit she was cheating on him when she wasn’t.
The woman told police that she rarely left her home for fear of further accusations from Adibe Chisom.
Adibe Chisom’s solicitor said his client now wants to get into politics – something he said he would be “adept” at since he’s “good a spinning what he maintains is the situation”.
Accused claimed former partner was cheating on him
Fiscal depute Dylan Middleton told Aberdeen Sheriff Court that between December 2017 and March 2019, Adibe Chisom began accusing his former girlfriend “of having several affairs and accused her of lying”.
“He stated that he had all the facts and wouldn’t believe anything she would say,” he said.
“The accused would shout and call the complainer an imbecile.
“He also continued to tell the complainer that she was sleeping with other men and was taking drugs.
“The accused stated that she had to admit this in order for them to move on.
“She said she felt she needed to agree with the accused in order to stop the accusations – she was upset by this.”
Mr Middleton also stated that Adibe Chisom would frequently turn up at the woman’s home, where he would accuse her of lying and cheating.
He said: “There were a number of occasions when the accused would ask the complainer a question and if he didn’t think the complainer was telling the truth, he would call her stupid and claimed her had proof she was lying.”
The woman later contacted the police about another matter but ended up disclosing the treatment she was receiving from Adibe Chisom.
She added that she rarely left her home due to being scared of receiving further recriminations from him.
Adibe Chisom was found guilty of one charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by repeatedly uttering offensive or derogatory remarks toward his former partner.
He also admitted a further charge of breaching a court order not to enter her property.
‘He’s good at spinning what he maintains is the situation’
Defence agent Mike Monro described the couple’s relationship as “toxic”.
He also told the court that Adibe Chisom has admitted that he did do the things described by the Crown Office.
Mr Monro added: “He is wishing to return to Nigeria pretty soon as he is intending to become actively involved in politics and the presidential election in the country.
“He might be very adept at being a politician because it’s difficult sometimes to get an answer from him when I put questions to him.
“He’s good a spinning what he maintains is the situation.”
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin fined Adibe Chisom, of Summerfield Terrace, Aberdeen, a total of £1,000.
She also put a non-harassment order in place meaning Adibe Chisom cannot approach his ex-partner for two years.
