A man whose angry reaction to an unexpected jail sentence left two court security employees injured has been sent back to prison.
Christopher Munro, known as Christie, had been expecting to be released from custody on April 26 2019 but was instead handed a 14-month jail term.
The 31-year-old didn’t react well and “kicked off” as he was being led into the prison van outside Aberdeen Sheriff Court, injuring two guards.
Before the case called yesterday, Christie became embroiled in another clash with security staff at the front door of the court building.
Having been asked to leave the building, he repeatedly re-entered and shouted and swore at staff, claiming it was too cold outside and that he could die in the August temperatures.
Fiscal depute Sean Ambrose said the incident happened around 2pm.
He said: “The two complainers overheard the accusing shouting and threatening to harm himself.”
Due to this, the security staff tried to remove him from the van but a “struggle ensued” and “as a result, both complainers were injured”.
One of the men was left with grazing to his arm and the other had bruising above his eye and other abrasions.
The injuries occurred as the men struck a wall during the struggle.
Christie, of Creel Court, Cove, pled guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, struggling with the men, resulting in them being injured.
Defence agent Chris Maitland said: “Mr Christie accepts this is obviously a serious matter.
“He was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for other matters on that day.
“He has little recollection of the offence. He expresses regret for his actions.”
‘The court’s extreme displeasure at behaviour of this kind’
Quoting a court-ordered social work report, Sheriff Graham Buchanan said: “He informed me he was given more time in custody and when he was placed in the cells he ‘kicked off’ as he was angry at being given more time in custody as he anticipated being released into the community that day.”
Summing up the incident, the sheriff said: “He was in the van shouting and swearing and because he was doing that he was taken back out of the van and, once he was out in the open, the struggle takes place and they collide with the wall.”
Mr Maitland said: “That’s all accepted.”
Addressing Christie, Sheriff Buchanan said: “As a result of your behaviour, two members of security staff suffered injuries and that’s not behaviour which they should be subjected to in the course of their work.
“You have a bad record of previous convictions and there is quite simply no alternative to a prison sentence in order to mark the court’s extreme displeasure at behaviour of this kind in the precinct of the court.”
He ordered Christie to be jailed for five months.
