Man hit with fine after flagging down police to report his own crime

A drunk Buckie man has been hit with a fine after reporting his own crime to police.

Glen Wilcox flagged down police officers to show them his bloodied hand and tell them he’d just smashed his partner’s window following an argument.

The 38-year-old had assumed they’d be out looking for him but the officers were actually just out on mobile patrol, Elgin Sheriff Court was told.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver said Wilcox made the admission after approaching officers at around 11.15pm on July 3 this year.

Figured he was a wanted man

“Officers were on mobile patrol in St Andrew’s Square in Buckie when they were flagged down by the accused who was clearly under the influence of alcohol,” she said.

“He freely stated that he thought the police were looking for him since he had smashed his partner’s window. His right hand was bleeding and he provided his partner’s address as St Peter’s Road in Buckie, which was nearby.”

En route to custody, he continued giving details about the argument he’d had with his girlfriend earlier that night but when police checked with her she didn’t wish to cooperate or report the incident.

Nonetheless, he wound up in court after his admission of culpable and reckless conduct at a trial diet last month.

Can’t remember that evening

His defence agent Matthew O’Neill said the pair had been drinking when an argument broke out and that his client had “no recollection” of the incident.

“Unfortunately an argument has taken place while both were under the influence and Mr Wilcox has no recollection of what has taken place,” the solicitor said.

“He has acted in a very foolish manner but in fairness to him he has reported himself to the police.”

He confirmed his client swiftly paid £130 to get the broken window repaired following the argument.

But now Wilcox, of St Peter’s Road, Buckie, must shell out a further £270 after sheriff Olga Pasportnikov handed him a financial penalty.
