A jealous and controlling husband monitored his wife’s phone, checked the mileage on their car after she’d used it and even threatened to kill her.
Peter Seivwright subjected his partner to more than two years of horrific verbal abuse and controlling behaviour.
The 55-year-old regularly accused his long-suffering partner of cheating on him and would go through her phone to make sure she was only speaking to people he approved of.
Seivwright even banned his wife from using their car, bought with her money, without his permission and would check the mileage when she did use it.
Fiscal depute Victoria Kerr told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the offences were committed at an address in Aberdeen where the couple, who have been married for 29 years, lived with their adult sons.
‘Everything was her fault’
She said: “From around April 1 2019 onwards, the complainer and children heard the accused regularly speaking to the complainer, calling her ugly, fat, a b**** and w**** as well as blaming her for any issues the couple had.”
Seivwright also accused his wife of cheating on her and would check her phone “to make sure he is happy with who she is texting and calling”.
Ms Kerr added: “He has, additionally, not allowed the complainer to use the car that the accused purchased using her money unless he specifically gives her permission and checks the mileage on her return.
“If she was late out, he would become angry with her.”
Seivwright had also been heard regularly shouting and swearing at his partner, working himself up into a “rage” and storming around the house.
He had even threatened to kill both himself and his wife.
On July 8 2021, there was an argument between the couple’s two children about how Seivwright’s behaviour was affecting their mother.
When Seivwright heard about the row he flew into a rage, shouting and calling his wife derogatory names and telling her “everything was her fault because she was mental and they were mental too”.
That evening, she was trying to sleep in the living room but her husband “constantly” came through and “tried to prevent her sleeping”.
‘The complainer tried to have this matter dropped’
The woman ended up sleeping in one of their son’s rooms and, in the morning, Seivwright entered and, in a “low, sinister voice”, said: “I’m in hell now.”
At one point, Seivwright’s wife put a note through their neighbour’s door apologising for the noise of previous arguments.
That evening, Seivwright began shouting and swearing at his partner so loudly that neighbours could again hear.
Their children became so concerned that they phoned the police, at which point Seivwright went to the window and shouted “I’m being attacked” and “continually” stated everything was his wife’s fault.
He was arrested but after being released he returned home and started shouting at swearing at the family “for getting him arrested”.
Ms Kerr said: “This continued until they were able to get him out of the house and locked him out, at which time he phoned the police to report he had been locked out.”
‘Hopefully, he’s seen the error of his ways’
Police attended and took statements from Seivright’s family and arrested him again.
Seivwright pled guilty to engaging in a course of behaviour that was abusive of his partner between April 1 2019 and July 10 2021.
Defence agent Charlie Benzies said: “The witnesses do not wish to be in court and the complainer tried to have this matter dropped but was unable to have that done.”
Mr Benzies said the first offender’s marriage had “broken down”, adding Seivwright “deeply regrets” the offence and had separated from his wife since, although there could still be reconciliation.
He added: “I don’t think there’s much prospect of Mr Seivwright coming before the court again. Hopefully, he’s seen the error of his ways.”
Sheriff Andrew Miller deferred the sentence on Seivwright, of Bedford Avenue, Aberdeen, until next month for reports.
