Inverness drug dealer taken off the streets for a year

A drug addict who was caught by police with several thousands of pounds worth of Class A narcotics in Inverness city centre has been jailed for a year.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that officers received intelligence that 35-year-old Dean Barrow was in possession of illegal substances.

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald was told that Barrow was traced to Church Street on July 9 2021 where a search was carried out.

The court was told that 100g of cocaine and 18g of heroin was recovered, with a total street value of £11,100.

‘No alternative’ but jail

Barrow had previously admitted possessing the two drugs with intent to supply them. No paraphernalia, like bags or cash, were found on him.

Barrow also admitted two further offences – a breach of the peace in Church Street outside the R and B bar on September 19 2021 and shouting swearing, struggling and threatening to fight with police who had been called to Grant Street, Inverness, on June 10 2022.

Sheriff Macdonald had deferred sentence for a drug treatment and testing order (DTTO) assessment and released Barrow, of Waverley Guest House, Union Street, Inverness, on bail.

When he returned to learn his fate, the sheriff decided against a DTTO, saying: “Because of the high value of Class A drugs, there is no alternative but to impose a period of imprisonment.”
