A car thief raced across a footpath near a children’s playpark to evade police capture during a high-speed joyride around Aberdeen.
Kieran Ord, 31, had earlier driven toward a police officer’s car to escape arrest.
The disqualified driver was being hunted after he stole a black Skoda from the Tesco superstore in Ellon, around 10.30am on June 26 this year.
Ord spent the next few days driving the vehicle around Aberdeen – at times more than double the speed limit, travelling 85mph in a 40mph zone.
The serial offender is already serving an 18-month prison sentence for previously leading a 90mph police chase and ramming an officer’s vehicle.
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Ord pled guilty to one charge of stealing a car, a second charge of speeding and a third charge of breaching his bail conditions.
He also admitted a further two charges of driving without a licence or insurance.
Fiscal depute Carol Gammie told the court that, around 10.30am on June 26 this year, Ord and another man were given a lift from Aberdeen to Peterhead by an acquaintance.
As the man stopped at the Ellon Tesco, he got out of the car and left the keys in the ignition.
“The accused and the other man stayed in the car while the complainer went into the shop,” Ms Gammie said.
“When he returned, his car was gone. He contacted the police.
“After the complainer had left the car, CCTV at Tesco showed the accused changing his T-shirt and moving from the passenger seat into the driving seat and then taking off at speed.”
Ord drove toward police car at speed
Later that same day, a speed camera on the A92 North Anderson Drive, Aberdeen, captured Ord driving the stolen vehicle, clocking speeds of up to 85mph in a 40mph speed limit zone.
Ord was then spotted by police four days later driving the same vehicle outside at an Aldi in Aberdeen.
As a police car attempted to block his exit from the car park, Ord drove at it at speed, before tearing across a pedestrian footpath close to a children’s playpark.
Although he made a clean getaway, Ord was later traced and arrested by police.
‘He apologises for his behaviour’
Ord’s defence solicitor Christopher Maitland told the court that his client was already jailed for 18 months for a similar incident on October 21 this year.
“There is very little that can be said about this matter,” he said. “He knows that a custodial sentence is appropriate and he apologises for his behaviour here.
“Mr Ord is quite clear that he needs to keep this type of behaviour from happening in future and wants to be a more positive member of society.”
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin sentenced Ord, whose address was given as HMP Grampian, to an additional nine months in prison.
She also disqualified him from driving for seven years and one month.
