A young Romanian has become the first driver in Caithness to fall foul of the new drink driving legislation.
Construction worker Ionut Ciubotariu, 21, was fined £330 and banned for a year after pleading guilty through an interpreter at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.
Police stopped him at the The Shore Wick, in the early hours of February 7 and a roadside test proved positive. Further tests revealed that he was nearly twice the limit.
The court heard that the ban could affect his job on the construction of the new High School in Wick.
First offender Ciubotariu, of 8 Dancing Cairns Crescent, Aberdeen, was advised that he could reduce the driving ban by third by successfully completing the drinks-driver rehabilitation scheme.
