A hammer-wielding teenager who chased a man into an Aberdeen shopping centre was chased out by members of the public.
Jay Jamieson, 19, followed the stranger into Union Square after he challenged him over having previously brandished a hammer at a different man on Guild Street.
Fiscal depute David Rogers said the incident happened at around 7.35pm on September 6 last year.
“He was observed acting aggressively towards another male and offering to fight him, which the man declined,” Mr Rogers said.
“At this time he was observed to have a hammer in his pocket and brandishing it before an unknown male challenged him in relation to this conduct.
Shoppers tackled him to floor
“An altercation ensued and the accused chased that male into Union Square shopping centre. The male then tackled the accused to the floor.
“The accused was surrounded by the other witnesses who were ushering him away from the locus.
“As he was tackled to the floor he lost possession of the hammer and it was handed to a security officer at the shopping centre.”
Security staff then contacted police and officers later traced, arrested and charged Jamieson.
Just a few weeks after the Union Square incident Jamieson was locked up for robbing a shop worker with an axe.
Already serving time for axe attack
He’s serving a custodial sentence at HMP Grampian in Peterhead until at least October this year.
Originally charged on indictment, his case was reduced to summary and appeared in the dock from custody to admit charges of threatening and abusive behaviour and breaching his curfew.
Defence agent Chris Maitland said “He has no reasonable excuse for what he did.
“It’s obviously aggressive and threatening behaviour. He needs to address his anger issues and he has maybe started doing that while in custody.
“He is doing his maths and English qualifications too and trying to deal with his drinking and drug taking that impacted him before going into custody.”
Sheriff Donald Ferguson told him: “Obviously this is a serious incident.”
He handed Jamieson, normally of Glenbervie Road, Aberdeen, but currently a prisoner at HMP Grampian, a £600 fine.
Given Jamieson has no time to pay that, he was given the alternative of 28 further days in custody.
