An Aberdeen man who was found to be five times the drink-drive limit was celebrating the news he was going to be a father by downing a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Deividas Kruglikovas, 27, appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted crashing his BMW into a wall close to the centre of the city.
As residents emerged from their homes to check on him, Kruglikovas stumbled from his vehicle and stated “you must not drink and drive” before putting a finger to his lips and making a “hush sound”.
When police arrived they found an empty bottle of Jack Daniels lying on the passenger seat of the vehicle.
Accused tried to restart car he’d crashed
Fiscal depute Ryan Diamond told the court that at around 2.20am on Boxing Day last year, residents on Virginia Street were awoken by “loud bang”.
“They looked out of their windows and saw a black car in the street which had crashed into a nearby wall,” Mr Diamond said.
“The accused exited the vehicle and residents went to assist him.
“However, as they did this the accused stated ‘you must not drink and drive’ and placed his finger to his lips and made a hush sound.
“He was unsteady on his feet and was slurring his words.
“The accused then got back into the car and tried to restart the engine.”
As police officers arrived on the scene they saw an empty bottle of Jack Daniels lying on the passenger seat.
Officers considered Kruglikovas to be under the influence and subjected him to a roadside test, which he failed.
When breathalysed back at Kittybrewster Police Station, Kruglikovas gave a reading of 111 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22mcg.
Kruglikovas pleaded guilty to one charge drink-driving.
‘He is rightfully ashamed of his conduct’
Defence agent Liam McAllister told the court that it was “entirely out of character” for his client to have acted in this “reckless way”.
He added: “The date was Boxing Day and he was celebrating the news that he was to become a father.
“He is rightfully ashamed of his conduct and the shame he has brought upon his family.”
Sheriff Robert McDonald told Kruglikovas: “This is a very high reading and I have to reflect that in how I deal with this case.”
He fined Kruglikovas, of Carmelite Street, Aberdeen, £640 and disqualified him from driving for 16 months.
