A man who described himself as a “weekend, casual, social smoker” has been banned from the road after being caught driving while under the influence of cannabis.
Cameron Jolly, 23, was snared when officers pulled him over on Virginia Street in Aberdeen and could smell cannabis coming from the vehicle.
A test found he had three-and-a-half times the legal limit of cannabis in his system.
Fiscal depute Lydia Ross told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the incident happened just before 10pm on January 23 last year when officers pulled Jolly over.
She said: “Police detected a smell of cannabis terminating from the vehicle and formed the opinion the accused was under the influence of cannabis.”
‘He’s very embarrassed and ashamed about being here’
Tests then revealed their suspicions to be correct.
Jolly, of Kepplehills Road, Aberdeen, admitted driving with seven microgrammes of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabis metabolite, per litre of blood.
The legal limit is two microgrammes.
Defence agent Graham Morrison said: “He describes himself as a weekend, casual, social smoker.
“He had smoked some cannabis six hours prior to being stopped by the police.”
Mr Morrison explained Jolly had thought he would be safe to drive.
He added: “He’s very embarrassed and ashamed about being here.”
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin fined Jolly £640 and banned him from driving for 12 months.
