An Aberdeen man has been jailed after he threw a Pot Noodle at Ukrainians as they were celebrating their war-torn country’s independence day.
Andrew Wallace was standing within a group of people who were goading and chanting at the crowd outside Marks and Spencer in Aberdeen on August 24 last year.
The city’s sheriff court was told the 48-year-old then turned and threw a Pot Noodle at the peaceful gathering, which included a large number of children.
It landed in amongst the crowd but thankfully didn’t hit anyone, the court heard.
Fiscal depute Tom Proctor said the crowd had formed outside the St Nicholas Centre store to mark Ukraine’s independence day.
He added: “At around 7pm, it was noted that there were a number of people near the crowd who were chanting things at the group, which was mostly made up of young families from Ukraine.
“The accused then joined those people while holding a Pot Noodle in his hands.
“He then proceeded to throw it over his shoulder and it landed in the crowd but didn’t appear to hit anyone gathered there.
“The police were contacted and the accused was later traced and cautioned and charged.”
Wallace pleaded guilty to one charge of culpably and recklessly throwing a plastic food container into a public meeting that included children.
‘He thought Pot Noddle was empty’
Defence agent Jenny Logan told the court that her client had “no awareness of the gathering”.
“But he got his food and was intrigued as to what this gathering was doing,” she said.
“Mr Wallace reacted without thinking and he thought the Pot Noddle was empty – he didn’t intend to cause anyone any harm.”
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin fined Wallace, of Bedford Road, Aberdeen, a total of £210, but, as he is currently on remand on a separate matter, she gave him no time to pay which will see him spend seven days in prison over the offence.
