A former window cleaner was caught drink-driving on his way home from his uncle’s funeral.
Keith Will appeared in court on crutches and may have to have his leg amputated after falling from his ladder – and has now also been banned from driving.
The 41-year-old was more than three-and-a-half times the alcohol limit when police spotted him driving through Aberdeen in his Vauxhall Meriva.
Will had been at his uncle’s funeral earlier in the day and had been drinking before “stupidly” deciding to drive home.
‘He stupidly took the vehicle to get home’
Fiscal depute Eabha Sweeney told Aberdeen Sheriff Court police spotted Will driving along Great Northern Road just after 1am on January 17 and decided to follow him due to the manner of his driving.
When Will pulled up between two parked cars on Cruives Walk, the officers approached and, when he opened the door, they noticed a “strong smell of alcohol”.
As Will got out, it became clear he had alcohol on his breath and was slurring his words.
A roadside breath test returned a positive result and he was arrested.
Will, of Ashgrove Place, Aberdeen, pled guilty to driving with 78 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 22 microgrammes.
‘It was an emotional time for him’
Defence agent Alex Burn said his client had been out of trouble for around 16 years, adding: “He’s very much turned his life around to a large extent.
“He was working as a window cleaner but fell and did extensive damage to his leg.
“There’s a possibility the leg may be amputated.”
Mr Burn said Will had been at a wake for his uncle during the day and had consumed alcohol.
He said: “It was an emotional time for him.
“He stupidly took the vehicle to get home.”
Sheriff Margaret Hodge banned Will from driving for 12 months and fined him £420.
