An Aberdeen man has appeared in court accused of robbing a pensioner outside a bank in Ellon.
It’s alleged that Andrew Johnston Hamilton took £500 from a 73-year-old man, who was in The Square area outside the Bank of Scotland just before 10am on Thursday.
The elderly man had just withdrawn the cash, it’s understood.
Following the incident, there were reports that members of the public chased a man.
A three-figure amount of money was also recovered by officers, Police Scotland has confirmed.
Released on bail
The 42-year-old has now appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on charges of assault and robbery.
He made no plea or declaration and was released on bail.
The accused, whose address was given as the Aberdeen area, is due to reappear in court on a date still to be decided.
Detective Sergeant Richard Cooper had previously confirmed: “At around 10am on Thursday we were called to a report of a robbery at The Square in Ellon.
“A 73-year-old man had a three-figure sum of cash stolen, which was later recovered.
“A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday.”
