A man has been handed a curfew over his role in a terrifying abduction and assault.
Daniel Rennie, 26, was found guilty after trial of being involved in the incident along with others on Derry Avenue in Aberdeen.
The group, of which Rennie was a part, abducted the man by grabbing him by the clothing and forcing him into a vehicle, detaining him against his will.
They then assaulted him by repeatedly striking him on the head, shouting and demanding money from him, all to his injury.
Rennie had pled not guilty over the incident, which happened on September 23 2020, but was convicted after a trial at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
‘You’re now in gainful employment and have a child and partner’
It’s understood Rennie played a “minor” role in the incident but was convicted on an art and part basis.
Defence agent Mike Monro said his client was “facing the music” over the offence.
He said Rennie, of Bedford Avenue, Aberdeen, now worked in the fish industry in Aberdeen, despite having broken his ankle in a road accident and having to wear a “big boot”.
Sheriff Lesley Johnston said the offence was a “serious” matter but that she took into account Rennie’s young age and limited record.
She said: “You have accepted that you were motivated by financial gain and a dispute regarding the cultivation of cannabis plants.
“I can see you have accepted responsibility for your actions.
“I’ve taken into account the age of the offence and in particular the changes you have made to your lifestyle since the commission of the offence.
“You’re now in gainful employment and have a child and partner.
“In all of the circumstances, I’m satisfied an alternative to a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
Sheriff Johnston imposed 12 months of supervision and a four-month curfew.
