A man who throttled his former partner and threw a slab through her mum’s front window has been jailed after he didn’t carry out his unpaid work.
William Norrie, 37, barged into the house and terrified his ex-girlfriend and her mother by trying to punch the younger woman before seizing her by the throat and choking her.
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard the two women ultimately managed to remove Norrie from the house before he returned and threw a paving slab through the living room window.
Norrie had previously been given unpaid work as an alternative to a prison sentence for the offence but had failed to carry out the community service.
As a result, Sheriff Ian Wallace jailed Norrie for four months.
Accused told ex he would ‘never stop’
Fiscal depute Lydia Ross told the court that on the evening of March 21 last year, Norrie’s former partner and her mother looked out the living room window to see him shouting and attempting to open the front door.
“They could see he was heavily intoxicated so the complainer contacted the police,” Ms Ross said.
“The accused then barged past the complainer’s mother as he continued to shout and swear while moving toward the complainer.
“He then called the complainer a ‘slut’ and said he would ‘never stop until they were back together’.”
“The complainer got the accused back outside where he continued to shout and swear as she went upstairs to check on her child, who was asleep.”
As the woman came back downstairs, Norrie stated: “Turn your head so I can punch you”.
Whereby he then attempted to punch her but didn’t fully connect as she turned her head as his fist approached her face.
Norrie then grabbed her windpipe and began to squeeze.
Victim managed to shout for mum
Thankfully, despite Norrie’s hands being around the woman’s throat, she managed to shout for her mother, who intervened.
The two women struggled with Norrie but managed to eventually get him outside the property whereby they closed and locked the front door.
He returned moments later with a stone slab and threw it through the living room window.
Norrie pleaded guilty to one charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and a second charge of assault against his former partner.
Defence agent Iain Hingston made an impassioned plea on behalf of his client during mitigation, stating that he would carry out the unpaid work he had previously been given as an alternative to a prison sentence at the last hearing.
“Mr Norrie knows he is on his last warning here and he will complete the hours,” he said.
However, Sheriff Wallace sentenced Norrie, of Morrison Drive, Aberdeen, to four months in prison.
