A teenager who “borrowed” his girlfriend’s car to go to the shops and ended up knocking down a motorcyclist has been banned from driving for 12 months.
Peterhead Sheriff Court heard yesterday that Edgars Lacis took the vehicle without permission to get provisions for his family.
The 19-year-old admitted driving while unsupervised with a provisional licence, driving without insurance, driving the car without the owner’s consent and colliding with another road user.
He took the ill-fated decision to get behind the wheel on April 14.
Fiscal Depute David Bernard told the court that Lacis, of 13 Whitehill Place, Peterhead, had been at home with his girlfriend and took her car without permission and drove it through the town towards South Road.
And when Lacis – who had six points on his provisional licence at the time of the incident – approached a roundabout, he crashed into a moped.
Mr Bernard said: “The driver of the moped saw the accused’s motor vehicle come straight towards him, making no effort to avoid him.”
The driver of the bike was then carried on the bonnet of Lacis’s car until it came to a stop.
Mr Bernard added: “Despite the collision, there was no suggestion that any of the parties were injured.
“He admitted that he had not seen the moped and also admitted that he was not insured to drive the vehicle, and had taken the car without permission.”
Sheriff Andrew Miller banned unemployed Lacis from driving for 12 months and ordered him to do 80 hours of unpaid work.
Lacis’s agent, solicitor Stuart Flowerdew, said his client had only taken the car to go shopping for his girlfriend and baby while they were asleep.
He said: “He lives with his girlfriend and they have a five-year-old daughter, and they also have a young baby.
“He thought it would be a good opportunity to get nappies and various things for the mother and baby.”
