A man crashed his work van into a fence while unfit to drive through drugs – then fell asleep when being dealt with by police.
Richard Sunley was involved in the one-vehicle accident on Waterloo Quay in Aberdeen.
But when officers arrived, they found the 49-year-old stumbling around and slurring his speech.
He also repeatedly fell asleep while police and a doctor were speaking to him.
Fiscal depute Anne MacDonald told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the incident happened around 9.50am on January 11 2021.
‘His pupils restricted and his eyes glazed’
She said: “Persons nearby heard a loud bang and the accused was found on his own at his vehicle, getting out of the driver’s seat”.
Witnesses asked if he was okay and Sunley said he was “fine”.
However, there was “extensive damage” to the van as a result of the collision with a fence.
Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved.
Ms MacDonald went on: “The police were quickly on the scene and noticed the accused seemed to be unsteady on his feet and was slurring his speech.
“He was unsteady, stumbling down steps and was noted to be falling asleep at times with his pupils restricted and his eyes glazed.”
Sunley expected to lose job
A test then returned a positive result for cannabis.
The court heard Sunley also fell asleep while a doctor was speaking to him.
Sunley, of Rosehill Drive, Aberdeen, pled guilty to a charge of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
Defence agent John McLeod said his client would lose his job as a result of being disqualified from driving.
Sheriff Eric Brown fined Sunley £470 and banned him from driving for a year.
